Health project

Jyothi Convent School

LOCATION: Parkal, Warangal, Andra Pradesh
Jyothi Convent School is located in  Parkkal, a very poor village in the district of  Warangal, in the south of  India. The inhabitants, most of whom are illiterate, do not have houses or fields and do badly paid casual jobs. The institute was built by the diocese of Warangal and donated to the  ‘Sisters of the destitute’, who look after about forty mentally ill and physically disabled children who come from very poor families that cannot even provide them with health care and much less  send them to school. These sisters provide physiotherapy and lessons as at school: in groups for the less serious cases or individually, in order to recover and develop the children’s mobility and mental capacities. The sisters are in urgent need of funds to cover the costs of the institute. They need money for food, clothes, medicines, stationery for the children, staff’s wages, electricity and gas. The provincial office of the ‘Sisters of the destitute’ covers a part of the expenses as it did for the project, but the amount needed to finance the institute properly is 9,000 euros a year. From the moment the institute was founded in 2006, Missione Calcutta has supported the efforts to save the innocent who embody all the tragedies of human destiny: poverty, disability and abandonment by poor families. These children need continual therapy in order not to lose the benefits of the physical and psychological rehabilitation. With continuous care aimed at the children’s development, some of them achieve results that are such as to enable them to attend a normal school and join classes with children of their own age. At present the centre cares for 40 children with various types of disability and their treatment and education have been guaranteed over the years by  Missione Calcutta.
