Missione Calcutta School

LOCATION: Oodlabari, Jalpaiguri, West Bengal
DATE: 2007-2011
This school is the largest building that Missione Calcutta has completed, taking over 2,000 children. Oodlabari is located in the district of Jalpaiguri, in West Bengala,  720 km. from Calcutta. It is an area of tea plantations, close to one of the most famous plantations in the whole world: Darjeeling. The living conditions of the majority of the population in the area, mainly immigrants from Nepal, are quite poor, because of the very low wages paid to tea pickers. Before the idea of building the school came into being, Missione Calcutta was already helping the children with a child sponsorship programme which enables many of them to go to school and receive food and health care. Missione Calcutta also started mini projects for the people of the villages, helping them to set up small farms: over the last 10 years, 10 small pig farms have been opened in the region. The idea of building a school arose from a meeting with the Salesians of  Don Bosco who were already present in the area with a centre including a nursery school and school for the pupils of  Odlabari and the nearby villages. Each class was attended by more than 150 pupils and, due to the lack of space, lessons were held on alternate days: the classes with odd numbers went to lessons on days with an odd number, while the classes with even numbers went on days with even numbers.  These conditions and the overcrowded classes made the quality of the teaching offered in the village school very poor, making the building of a larger school essential. Thanks to the generous donation of a supporter, Missione Calcutta was able to build a two storey school between  2007 and 2011, for the first to the twelfth class, with two sections each. Apart from the school,  Missione Calcutta built a dormitory to house pupils coming from remote villages and two wells. Now the pupils can go to a new, safe and larger school, surrounded by a big garden where they can spend happy moments during recreation. The school is still run by the Salesian fathers who provide more than 2,000 pupils with a good education.
