Alternative Health Care Clinic

LOCATION: Kalidanga, P.O. Khorbona, Rampurhat, Birbhum, Dt., West Bengal
DATE: 2000
Due to the significant number of people suffering from illnesses of the nervous system and brain disorders,  in 1994, father Peter, assistant pastor in the parish of Chilimpur, set up a clinic to treat patients who were completely or semi paralysed, suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, arthritis, polio, rheumatism, cerebral palsy and other disorders of the nervous system and of the muscles. The main beneficiaries of the work of father Peter were the  population of  Santali and other tribal groups who, for the most part, were turned away by other hospitals. Owing to their poor economic conditions, malnutrition and the impossibility to receive health care, these people are often victims of chronic illnesses such as tuberculosis, arthritis, paralyses, osteoarthritis, rheumatism, cervical and lumbar spondylosis. In the first years of operation, the clinic, which although rudimental was very efficient, treated about 7,000 patients. In 2000, however, the need arose to move the clinic to a more accessible location and to buy better equipment to improve the lives of a much higher number of poor people. As a result of this need and following a visit by some of our volunteers who were able to see with their own eyes the situation in which the clinic was in, a partnership was set up with  Missione Calcutta. Within just a short time, Missione Calcutta financed the building of the  Alternative Health Care Clinic in Rampurhat, a city 25 km. from Chilimpur which is easily reached by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. Apart from the building,  Missione Calcutta provided the equipment necessary for the treatments, two wells for drinking water and 5 houses where the family of patients being treated in the clinic can stay. With physiotherapy, homeopathic medicine, traction, magnetic therapy, ultrasound and physical exercise, father Peter and his staff treat about  105 people a day, most of whom come from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and Orissa. In 2015, 32,790 people benefited from the treatment provided by the clinic of whom  18,750 were men,  10,920 women and 3,120 children.
