HARRY AND NICOLA
Remote support provides a better future for thousands of children every year. This is the reason why Nicola didn’t hesitate when he had the opportunity to make the difference.
Harry is an Indian child with a severe physical disability that prevents him from being independent. He requires constant attention, cannot communicate or express himself, does not move on his own and needs to be fed. Despite these challenges, he is remarkably intelligent and lively and he can understand what is happening around him.
Harry lives with two crucial figures in his life, his mother and his grandmother, and often his uncle who helps them. Until a few weeks ago, they lived in a house unsuitable for his needs, especially due to high humidity that was harmful to his health. However, they have now managed to move to a more suitable facility.
A true long-distance friendship started between Harry and Nicola. Throughout the year, Nicola often sends letters to Harry, and he responds every Christmas with some thoughts transcribed by his mother, because of his physical challenges.
A few weeks ago, during a mission in India, Nicola visited Harry and his family. When he saw him, the child expressed immense joy and recognized Nicola: ‘When I met him, it was very emotional because, as soon as he saw me, he started moving his whole body, laughing, and smiling. He understood it was me. Then he saw four other people who had come to interview his mother. That’s when he burst with joy. We played with him, entertained him, and he would grab the ball with his hands and throw it back. It was beautiful.’
Nicola supports Harry with a monthly contribution of 20 euros. With this small sum, the sponsor provides for 3 meals a day, all the necessary medicines for Harry, school materials, and transportation, enabling him to continue attending school.
As the mother has to stay with him all day, she cannot find employment, and the grandmother receives a minimal pension that is not enough to support all the three of them. Nicola’s remote support becomes crucial for this family, especially in the medical and health areas, which remain the most critical for Harry.
A true older brother, even if from afar.
